Ottawa, CANADA, October 9th, 2014
On October 8th, 2014, In-TAC hosted two major events; our second annual career expo and first national symposium entitled “Where Business Meets Immigration Policy Makers”. Both events were held concurrently at the Ottawa Convention Centre, and both were a success!
With over 900 job seekers and visitors in attendance, and over 40 hiring employers and community resources looking to fill over 1000 job vacancies, In-TAC’s career expo was a busy place. The event, Ottawa’s largest career expo for IT and finance professionals, ran from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario (CPA), Royal Bank of Canada and Carleton University’s Technology Innovation Management (TIM) Program were this year’s sponsors.
The expo and symposium were launched by keynote speakers, Corinne Prince-St-Amand, Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s Director General, Integration-Foreign Credentials Referral Office, and Dr. Tony Bailetti, Director of Carleton University’s Technology Innovation Management (TIM) Program who, during his opening speech, pledged his sponsorship for next year’s expo. Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario (CPA) presented In-TAC accounting graduate, Waseem Abbasi, with a $2500 scholarship.
Job seekers commented that they liked the breadth of employers and the positive atmosphere. They also felt that the employers were really sociable and eager to answer questions. “Very professional and friendly, they made me feel welcome if I wanted to open a business”, commented one attendee about the Entrepreneur’s Corner.
Livia Koneval, WSIB Student Success Specialist said, “The event was outstanding, very well organized, the turn out tremendous. We met, networked and made connections with a great amount of prospective Algonquin College students.”
Stella Garcia Maiz of the Strategic Community Initiatives Branch of the City of Ottawa, commented that the symposium’s “subject matter was very interesting, if anything, we would have liked to have more time to engage in dialogue. It’s so important to make sure we continue to encourage conversations between key players, and the In-TAC Symposium was a perfect opportunity for it.”
Symposium and career expo attendees gathered around the media area at noon to hear Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s (CIC) Minister, Chris Alexander, speak about the labour shortages Canada is experiencing and what CIC is doing, through programs such as Alternative Careers and the new Express Entry model, to mitigate those challenges.
In-TAC would like to thank everyone who came out to make In-TAC’s 2nd annual career expo such a success! Special thanks to all of our partner employers who worked tirelessly all day interviewing and networking with motivated job seekers.
